I'm so mad! My first theft just occurred today. The little girl across the street had a birthday on Friday but they were out of town all weekend. So late last night (Sunday night) I set out the message board saying: Laura, Hope
And I put out my giant rubber duckies on each side of it. The giant rubber duckies are adorable. They are about 12" high, 17" long, fat, with big blue eyes. I took a digital picture this morning for my web site. I was home most of the day working at the computer, in front of the window that looks out toward where the duckies were displayed. Tonight when I went to pick up the display, one was gone. I'm so mad! They don't cost that much and it certainly would not be wise to file an insurance claim and cause my insurance to go up over something like this. I debated whether I should even call the police. I mean, I don't expect them to find the duckie. But I wanted to cover my rear. One of my "online friends" who also runs a lawn greetings business had this happen to her, only it was a little different. She noticed a critter was gone when she went to pick the display up from the customer's house, knocked on the door, and asked if they had noticed any noise or commotion. They said they didn't. She asked them to let her know if it turned up, and said sometimes neighborhood kids take them not realizing it's stealing and then their parents find out and make them return them. But she had a feeling about this woman, and drove by a few days later. The critter was nestled in the flower beds. My friend stopped the car, took her critter, and left. So I just wanted to be able to cover my rear. OK you guys might think I'm crazy after this. I decided to go ahead and call to file a police report on the stolen duckie. Sure, I know
they're not going to issue an all-points-bulletin for him. But I It certainly made for an interesting phone call with the young police officer. Ironically, his name was Officer Holstein. I think he needs to rent my cow display. I was describing
the duckie to him for the report and he was laughing. He said this is
the "cleanest" strange theft report he's ever filed. Usuallyl
the He said, "OK I assume it's a yellow duckie." I said, "Yes. A yellow duckie with an orange beak and big blue eyes." He said, "Is there anything on him that would distinguish him as being yours? Like your name or your company name on him?" I said, "No,
no words on him that would show he is mine. And that's only He said, "Right. You could probably recognize a giant rubber duckie. Not many folks will have those." I said, "And
if you find him and bring him in for a line-up, I'm sure I can I measured the duckie and gave the duck's stats to Holstein. Told him about the drill holes and glue globs. (I have to do this to my critters to be able to stab them into the ground, otherwise they would blow away.) Told Holstein the duck's estimated value. He said,
"OK by 'giant rubber duckie' I was thinking it was so large you I said, "No, it's not that big. But compared to your basic bathtime variety of rubber duckie, this one would be considered giant." He said if I do find the duckie in someone's yard, and I'm ready to snatch him back, just make sure that I'm not putting myself in harm's way and won't cause a disturbance. If I need help getting the duckie back, call them. How hilarious is that? "Um,
yeah. I reported my giant rubber duckie stolen and now I need backup."

Did you know that your homeowner's insurance won't cover theft or loss for your business? When your craft is a hobby, it is covered, but the instant you take the step into turning your craft into a business, you will no longer be covered. In some cases, by running a business in your home and not informing your insurance company can also cause your regular homeowner's insurance to become invalid, meaning if your house burns to the ground, your insurance company would not have to pay on the claim. You should first contact your insurance company. Often they have riders that can be added to your homeowner's insurance that will cover your business. You should cover all supplies, tools, equipment, and inventory.Think about everything you use for your business. Do you use your computer, printer and fax machine for your business? Be sure to include those too. You should ask about how your insurance will cover inventory fluctuations. In November, your inventory will likely be much higher than it would be in the first week of January, if you do a lot of holiday related sales. With this kind of coverage, your monthly insurance rate will change, and you will have to report on inventory changes to your insurance company each month. Like with all businesses, rates can widely vary. If the insurance coverage quote seems high from your regular insurance company, it would pay to shop around. Some companies even cater to those who run home and small businesses. Your savings can be significant just by making a few phone inquiries to competing insurance companies.
