Getting
a Business License in Canada
Business licenses are not granted
by the province, but by your municipality instead. Business license fees
vary greatly from municipality to municipality in each province, and the
fees can vary greatly depending on what type of business you have, your
business square footage, or a number of other factors each municipality
decides on individually.
You will need to contact your
local municipality for full requirements needed to apply for a business
license, and you may need to provide further information or details depending
on the type of business you are running.
If you are running a home-based
business, the municipality will check the zoning bylaws for where your
home resides to be sure that your business does not violate any current
zoning bylaws. If it does, you will have to go before your town or city's
council or board of variance to apply for a exemption to the current bylaw.
In most municipalities, you
must register your business name in your province before they will grant
you a business license (or provide paper work showing that your application
is being processed). Your business license will then be issued to your
approved business name.
