Patenting Your Idea

You have a great idea, believe you can make your millions with it, but you want to protect your idea. In Canada, you will need to patent your idea. By patenting your idea, the government will offer your idea protection for twenty years.

You've got the idea, but when should you apply? As soon as possible! Why? Because even if you came up with the idea first, the patent is given to the first inventor who applies. This is why it is so important to apply for your patent as early as you can, because if someone is on the same wavelength as you, the patent will be granted to the person who submits their application first.

How do you get a patent? You must apply to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office in Quebec.

Want to see if the idea you have is already patented? You can search the Canadian Patents Database.
