Test Marketing Your Product on eBay

Do you want a great way to test market your product? Test marketing is important when you are considering launching your product into a full-scale business, or when deciding whether to quit your full-time job to devote it to your business.

Try selling your product on eBay. For as little as thirty cents, you can easily test market your product. When you do that, it is important to follow several important steps for the best exposure and sales.

  1. Take clear pictures. Poor quality photos are a big complaint of buyers on eBay. Make sure they are clear and in-focus. If not, reshoot.
  2. Optimize your photos. Three great photos are useless if it takes two minutes to download each one. Size them so it takes no longer than five seconds to download each one, but if the time is down to two seconds, it is even better.
  3. Carefully choose your title. What words would people use when looking for an item like yours? Be sure to include those in your title. But be sure not to keyword spam - using words that have nothing to do with your item, or that are registered trademarks of a company. For instance, you cannot use the word Tommy Hilfiger or Baby Gap unless they are authentic. You cannot use Baby Gap in your title, even if your custom embroidered baby jeans look a lot like the Baby Gap ones. Both of these offences can result in eBay cancelling your auctions - along with any bids you may have received. Repeated offenses can result in your suspension from eBay.
  4. Be very descriptive. Describe your item in great detail. Because you don't have a well known brand name backing your product, you need a good description so people know exactly what they are receiving. You could even add a little bit about you and your business. Just remember, you cannot include a link to your own webpage from your auction page. You can only include a link on your eBay "About Me" page. Of course, you can include any promotional material with your emails and shipped orders.
  5. Open an eBay Store. You can list an item in an eBay store for up to four months. But you should continue listing items in regular auctions to encourage people to check out additional items you have in your eBay store.

eBay is a great way top test market an item. With the increased traffic, you will have a good idea of the marketability of your product. Don't forget to search what other similar items are selling for on eBay too!
