Pattern Designer
If you are a natural at creating
original designs for your crafts, why not sell those patterns to create
a profitable home business?
After you have come up with
your design, you just write clear, step-by-step instructions. Don't just
assume that someone will know you have to do something in order to achieve
the end result - your instructions should be easy to understand for even
a first-time crafter.
Your next step is to give those
instructions to a friend and have her try it out ( do not show her the
actual finished product). Give her money for the supplies, and ask if
she had trouble finding the neccessary supplies for the project. Nothing
will turn a person off quicker than a product or item she can only find
online or in a big box craft store.
As she makes the craft, ask
if she runs into problems, or stumbles anytime along the way. Have her
make notes so that you can go back and revise the instructions to make
them clearer. Are the diagrams or photos easy to understand? Would an
additional picture of a certain step be helpful?
Then, give the instructions
to a second person, and see if she has any trouble. Repeat until you are
satisfied that the instructions are as clear as possible.
Where do you sell your patterns?
Magazines, craft kit wholesalers and large craft stores all buy patterns.
Some smaller stores do as well, and will often buy numerous copies of
your pattern if you will host a class or workshop on that particular craft
(and they will often pay you a fee as well). Magazines will give you the
best exposure, particularly if you are launching your own mail order or
online craft pattern business.
