Which
is Better?
Set Hours or Work When You Can?
When first beginning your journey
into the telecommuting world, be sure to find out your scheduling options.
Many telecommuting jobs prefer you schedule breaks and will even let you
work hour by hour if you so chose, so make a list to find out which one
will be most accommodating for you and what your options are.
One of the hardest things about
telecommuting and working from home can be trying to get your toddler
used to your schedule. If you are making phone calls, you most likely
don't want your toddler having a tantrum in the background while you are
speaking with a client.
Pros
& Cons; Work when you can:
- This means you will be able
to schedule your shift around your toddler's schedule. (I.E. If you
know your toddler generally naps at 12-2 each day you can schedule to
work during his naptime.)
- This may also help you have
less stress. When you are able to take breaks in between and not feel
guilty for neglecting your toddler nor your work, you will be a happier
Mom and worker.
- The downfall can be, not
working as many hours as you would like. If you don't work set hours
and your company is set up first come first serve, you may cost yourself
a few hours of work.
Pros
& Cons; Scheduled Hours
There can also be some cons
that might factor in depending on your job scheduling availability.
- If you have to be scheduled
for a certain time each and everyday, this can be difficult to accomplish
on some days if you have other things that arise during your day; such
as doctor visits etc.
- On a positive note, some
telecommuting jobs have work on a first come first serve basis, if you
are scheduled during those hours, it makes a better chance you might
have steady work.
When it's all said and done,
you must weigh out your options and find out your companies scheduling
procedures. After all, the main reason we usually want to work from home
and telecommute is to be with our children and family!
